Orphan
A child was born to Kate and John Coleman. Stillborn. Wracked with pain, they adopt Esther, an orphaned 9 year old girl, to, in a way, replace their dead baby. The Russian girl may look innocent with her pig tails and freckles, but, as there is always a but, she has a dark side. When Kate tries to convince the others in her family that Esther is evil, they do not believe her as they are fooled by Esther’s innocent looks. Is Kate still suffering from the loss of her baby or is Esther really behind all the horrid events that have taken place since joining the family?
ORPHAN has had a lot of hype about how it would be the horror film of the Summer. I must admit that it lives up to all the hype. The script is amazing. It lays out a suspenseful plot that grabs a hold of the viewer. The plot also has some complexity about it making it better than all the other predictable run-scream-hide-die horror films whose characters are full of the stupidity associated with the blondest of blondes. ORPHAN is a nice fresh breath of suspense and horror.
Isabelle Fuhrman definitely does Esther justice. She has the cute looks and does a great Russian accent. She spikes curiosity in the viewer. There seems to be something that she’s hiding, a secret, and Fuhrman portrays this very well in her character. As Esther, she drives Kate, played by Vera Farmiga, to craziness. Vera Farmiga portrays the tortured soul very well. I sympathize with her; she’s lost her baby and only she can see that the little girl she adopted is an evil child.
